Yeah, I think Ben and Laz have summed up my thoughts on this perfectly.
I've done internet radio before, and its just a nightmare - from cost, legality and scheduling.
It is quite expensive to run as there are server and licensing costs. Licensing is quite expensive - and this is where the legal issue arises too. Basically, a few years ago, all of the worlds licensing companies decided that they were going to charge a license fee for internet radio broadcasting. Each country then came up with a licensing fee for a broadcasting license - but not one of the licensing comapnies sat down with any of the others to come up with a "worldwide" licence. So, you could pay £1000 for a UK license, but that would become invalid if an american tuned in, as you'd then need an American license. The ruling around internet radio broadcasting is so confusing that even the licensing companies aren't sure what they're doing - and not one internet radio station is fully legal - its impossible until a worldwide organisation is set up to handle licensing.
It also takes up so much time to run. I began to hate DJ Source radio because I spent day after day updating websites, setting up new DJ's, paying licensing fee's, etc. It took up so much time that If I took a day off to "have a life", I had too much to catch up on. It became like a second job that I didn't get paid for - and the only rewards were sarcastic emails from DJ's saying "I can't connect to the servers for X reason" - when half of the time, it was only because they couldn't be bothered to read the email I sent them with the broadcasting instructions on.
I hated it!
I love this site though - there are loads of plans in the pipeline, and my ultimate goal is to become THE website for all things Trance - from finding out tune release dates & club line-ups to having a selection of mixes available to download by famous DJ's. Its all coming together nicely, and i'll continue to work on it for years to come. Eventually, i'd like to put on TTA Trance nights where you, the forum members, will get the opportunity to DJ at. It'll all happen eventually.
This site does take up time, but unlike DJS Radio, I can take time out now and again and still be able to catch up, and its also enjoyable because each day I cna do something different - one day I can add a new feature to the site, another day I can put press releases online, another day I can edit mixes to go into the Mix Vault, etc - every day is different so it breaks things up.
Internet radio is the same thing, day in, day out, and becomes a chore with very little rewards or thanks.
