Well, so far, all i've done is had my soundcard input at a decent volume (not sky-high in the reds, but not low in the greens either), and had my line-levels set equally as appropriate on my mixer.
Because my transfer is going to be a permanent switch to CD, I also invested in a new cart and stylus so that the quality is better.
Some vinyl cleaning fluid is also handy for those stubborn records that have a bit too much snap, crackle and pop. Some seem to attract more dust and crap than others - perhaps its something to with the quality of the vinyl and the amount of static being present.
What i'd do is transfer one to CD, listen to it back through your CD deck, and if its perfect quality, set everything else you transfer to the same volumes. That way, you should have perfect copies every time.
